One of the main barriers preventing an organisation’s workforce from engaging with the issue of sustainability is linked to a simple problem – poor organisational learning. Despite great efforts on the part of individuals, and teams, tasked with engaging their organisation with the issue of sustainability, knowledge around the subject remains poor and, as a result, the uptake of sustainability initiatives can often be slow or, in some cases, almost non-existent. The topic is seen as dull, boring, and a hindrance to growth and, as such, not something to be prioritised, or embraced.
Sound Matters’ ‘Sound Business’ service has been developed to provide innovative, refreshing, and exciting ways to mainstream sustainability frameworks across organisations.
We work alongside the sustainability champion/s responsible for mainstreaming sustainability awareness and practices across their organisation. Whilst we make no claims that our activities will make an organisation more sustainable, we do believe that by supporting cross-organisational learning, we will facilitate the uptake of sustainability initiatives which will, in turn, help the organisation become ‘fit for purpose’ in a world facing environmental limits. Importantly, we are able to provide access to experts who will be able to facilitate and support an organisation’s sustainability journey.
An organisation that is ‘fit for purpose’ needs to understand the threat posed to their operations from issues such as: climate change, biodiversity loss, deforestation, soil erosion, population growth, and the renewable energy revolution. Any organisation that is going to survive and thrive in the coming years needs to mainstream sustainability into all of its operations. If they do not, then it is unlikely the organisation will survive. Sound Matters’ role is to present the key issues of sustainability in a fresh and engaging way so that organisations feel empowered to embrace sustainability and, importantly, mainstream it across their activities. Whilst we do not profess to have all the answers, we do have the ability to ensure all members of an organisation understand the issue of sustainability and know why a flourishing organisation is not one that simply reduces unsustainable practices; rather, it is an organisation that creates and embraces a new organisational culture, and new ways of working, that have the wellbeing of people and planet at their heart.
We use sound, sound installations, audio experiments and expert knowledge, to take an organisation on a journey towards sustainability. We believe that sound provides a new, innovative, fresh, and empowering, way to engage with issues that organisations need to understand if they are to be ‘fit for purpose’ and flourish in the future. Sound Matters’ approach is not orthodox; we want the issue of sustainability to be very much alive and one that is seen as an exciting opportunity, rather than a dull necessity. As such, we encourage an organisation to change its perception of sustainability from an issue that has been foisted on them, to one that they actively embrace.
